THE WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 11th – 12th, 2021 AS IT WAS:
It was the day of the ride specially dedicated to commemorating the centenary year of the inception of Brevets being organized by the Audax Club Parisien (ACP). Audax India Randonneurs (AIR) saw participation of great magnitude with 60 clubs across India participating in the specially organized Randonnée to mark the centenary celebrations. Randonneurs across the country proved their mettle despite facing rough weather conditions.
11th September 1921 marks the inception of ACP and thus began a journey which has today become a movement. It has in fact become a way of life for thousands of people around the world! Once again in 2021, 11th September became a prominent day thus calling for a huge Centenary Celebration of the BRMs to canonize Audax. There was a collective surge of excitement observed across continents. Clubs and riders in India were no far behind in their zeal and enthusiasm while recreating this day in the history of randonneuring. The centenary celebrations were a sight to behold, bringing together diverse personalities and myriad cultures. Following in the footsteps of the founder members, a group of friends, who took off on their first brevet of 200 Km a 100 years ago, randonneurs from clubs pan-India got together to celebrate this landmark event thereby connecting to the global community of Randonneurs.
This day helped create a stronger sense of belonging with the ACP amongst the Randonneurs in India along with increased awareness about its history and functioning as each of the riders relived the moments of the Brevet de Randonneur a Allure Libre, the first brevet the ACP had organized on this day. It helped reiterate the core features of this sport of randonneuring as developed by the club. The most important feature being that these rides are essentially ‘self-paced’ and ‘self-supported’ and even today, this facet is an integral part of every BRM that is organized anywhere in the world. Every randonneur is expected to reflect this ethos when entering the world of Audax.
Six months, numerous online seminars and settling of indefinite phone-queries by hundreds of volunteers and officials led to a successful execution of this event. Now most riders stand on this day better equipped and better informed to delve deeper into the sport.
4,750 Registered riders at 60 clubs across India felt privileged to be associated with a club having a hundred-year-old rich heritage. Through all the clubs coming together to celebrate this day they renewed the spirit of Audax.
True to the name, Audax, Bangalore Randonneurs saw 400 riders embark on the centenary BRM with an ‘audacious’ vigor. For many other clubs too, it turned out the highest participation they had seen in years, besides Bangalore was Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Cochin, Nagpur and Bhubaneshwar to name a few. The heartening part was, even the towns which saw minimum participation ensured the safety and joy of their riders. They cut no corners to make it a big one in their own way.
Endurance here is the Key and is the secret to every successful long distance Randonneur completing the rides. Tough mental strength was seen in most riders throughout who kept going despite heavy rains and rough weather. The riders at Delhi, Mumbai and Nashik faced heavy rains and cross-winds while still others at Pondicherry faced tormenting heat. Nevertheless, the true spirit of a randonneur will never deter him from completing the ride. And that is what they did. This ride to them was truly special for the significance it holds for the entire community of long-distance riders.
Many went a step further and brought to the table some unique concept or creative idea in their own way. To mention a few striking ones that the respective clubs can take pride in were: -flagging off the ride with fireworks and an on-route entertainment vehicle set forth in Hyderabad to keep the spirits of the riders high; Some displayed immense creativity in banners and standees while some others sent across a wave of nostalgia. To mention a few, the riders from Hubbali and Vishakhapatnam took a page from Audax’s history and replicated the print of its past rides on their current brevet cards and posters; Jalandhar welcomed riders to the beat of traditional drums and dance, Delhi Randonneurs had an extravagant celebration as they wound up the event with an elaborate dinner for the riders.
Riders at Malad (Mumbai), Dhule and a few other cities celebrated the centenary with the ceremonial cake cutting. Most cakes befittingly designed like the medal being issued specially for this ride. Likewise similar excitement prevailed across other cities and towns celebrating this day.
As has been the purpose of these brevets when they first began: to create a love for long distance cycling, also to turn cyclists into adventure-seeking individuals and ultimately coming to enjoy the very journey – the clubs at most places chose to pick a route that would either be very scenic or be one where aspects like the heritage and in the others the rural culture could be explored. Riders at Pondicherry and Bhubaneshwar chose a route to cover heritage sites and monuments, making their rides soul stirring ones. The randonneurs at Guwahati passed through the lush green tea gardens to reach the Bhutan border. Imphal Randonneurs kicked off their 200 Km tour of Imphal valley from the Hafta Kangjei Bung Palace, one of the oldest Polo grounds in the world.
The volunteers, equally involved, executed the event flawlessly. Even the cities that saw maximum participation ensured that the preparations were impeccable. We are still receiving testimonials of riders from across the states applauding the work of the organizers and volunteers in executing an event of this grand scale. Many clubs faced pandemic related issues and curfews like they did in Mangalore and Mumbai but as they say, ‘Where there is a will, there is a way.’ It is indeed commendable how these cities managed to execute the event under full compliance of local restrictions by finding their own ways of flagging off the participants for this coveted ride.
Cycling, for some, has become a way of life, offering life lessons along the way, as put across by a randonneur from Chennai. Bangalore being one of the first randonneuring cities in India maintains the same, as long distances on bicycles is not uncommon for a Bangalorian.
The striking bit about this event was that India known for its diversity in its people, culture and geographical features celebrated the centenary in unison as one community. It connected towns across the nation from all four corners and yet each of the clubs maintained their distinctiveness.
Needless to say, this centenary ride got extensive media coverage in many a local newspapers. All in all, this event turned out to be an apt tribute to the BRMs of ACP which for the riders was an experience they’ll cherish for years to come.

Part of the Golden Triangle of Odisha, the city of Bhubaneshwar, staying true to its ancient heritage and inspired by the first Audax randonneurs of France celebrated that legendary moment in Cycling with their ride titled – The Black Pagoda! it’s the Bhubaneswar Cycling and Adventure Club that was at the helm of organising this befitting ride.

From the ship-building capital of India, Vishakhapatnam, the Spartans Pedal N Chain Cycling Club, true to their name, showed simplicity, dedication and self-discipline. Their distinctive and catchy Poster and the Brevet Card hold our attention!

The twin city doesn’t lag behind! This colorful group of 65 riders took off in style, sparkling all the way on the Centenary ride organized by Secunderabad Randonneurs.
Straight from India’s Commercial Capital, Mumbai, is felt the ‘never give up’ spirit. Rain, wind or curfew, they take on the challenge like a sport! Mumbai Randonneurs celebrated its 10th anniversary in tandem with ACP’s Centenary Celebrations.
Cyclone Cycling Club celebrated the Centenary Ride on a very scenic route from Ahmedabad to Zanzari Waterfall which passes through beautiful, lush green Gandhinagar, the state Capital of Gujarat. The club saw a record participation of 125 riders that day.
Madras Randonneurs pulled out their “ECR Classic” route for the Centenary Ride and to relive the memory of the very first BRM-200 organised in Chennai back in 2011 that saw 65 riders embark on their Randonneuring journey. A whopping 295 riders rode on 11th September 2021 on this coastal road connecting Chennai, the state capital of Tamil Nadu, to Pondicherry, a Union Territory and a former French colony, is very scenic route going along lots of backwater ways and long bridges over those backwater ways making it a wonderful attraction for the riders.
The serene spiritual town of Pondicherry, a former French colony, saw the Pondy Pedalers celebrating the Centennial year of Randonneuring as well as their second anniversary. This they did in classic style, encompassing history and heritage of the town and finishing up with the sumptuous raisin cake served by the Auroville Cycling Community. A treat indeed!
Chaque année, pour la commémoration du 11 novembre, au carrefour de l’armistice, à Rethondes, a lieu la concentration du souvenir, organisée par la Pédale Compiégnoise Cyclotouriste (PCCT), suivie d’un dépôt de gerbe au monument des Alsaciens et des Lorrains. Il sera rendu hommage aux militaires à vélo, d’une part les estafettes chargés de transmettre les ordres de l’Etat-Major, de l’autre un groupe de chasseurs cyclistes qui fut envoyé au front. La clairière de l’armistice à Rethondes est devenue célèbre car c’est là, dans un wagon, que fut signée la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale. Ce lieu, symbole mondial de la liberté, est donc symboliquement le point de départ mais aussi l’arrivée de cette randonnée.

Pour les plus courageux, l’A C B O NEUILLY Sur SEINE organise un rallye au départ du carrefour Pleyel vers 6h30 avec un départ décalé à Plailly vers 8h00. Sur le retour, nombreux sont ceux qui déjeunent ensemble à Verberie.
Habituellement, les adhérents de l’Audax Club Parisien sont invités à participer à la cérémonie commémorative puis, ceux qui le souhaitent, se retrouvent ensemble dans un restaurant de Compiègne ou de ses alentours.

L’Audax Club Parisien, par son travail d’équipe, a montré, une nouvelle fois, sa capacité à organiser un superbe événement : le BRM 200 du centenaire. Il laissera un souvenir inoubliable à tous les participants. Les conditions sanitaires et son lot de mesures constamment changeantes, n’ont pas freinés notre détermination d’y parvenir.
Rapide rappel chronologique : Dans la revue cyclotourisme n°696, figure un article sur Gaston Clément désigné père fondateur de la fédération. A la lecture de l’article surgit l’idée de fêter le centenaire des BRM 200 nés en 1921. Ce sera lors de la dernière remise des récompenses, le 11 janvier 2020, que sera évoqué ce projet. Il a fallu rechercher, dans les archives, des éléments se référant à ce premier BRM 200. Des cartes de route et des médailles rappelant cette épreuve ont été réalisées. A la vue du parcours originel, il a très vite été convenu que celui du centenaire ne pourrait pas être identique. Le 26 septembre 2020, l’ACP organise son BRM de reconnaissance avec un repas convivial au pied de la cathédrale de Chartres. Grâce à l’aide de l’Amicale cyclotouriste de Versailles, un lieu de départ qui convenait pour cette occasion a pu être trouvé : le stade de Porchefontaine à Versailles. La mise en place du système de pré-inscription via notre site, déjà testé avec les 200km pour 200 nanas, a rempli pleinement son rôle. L’absence d’inscriptions sur place a grandement facilité la remise des cartes de route toutes prêtes. Finalement, il a été décidé d’offrir un somptueux buffet pour fêter cet anniversaire comme il se doit. Tous les membres qui se sont joints à l’organisation de cet anniversaire ont su surmonter toutes les difficultés pour un excellent résultat. Je les en remercie chaleureusement.

Beaucoup auront deviné qui était Juliette, la caissière de Pierre DESVAGES, qui fut donc la première femme a effectué Paris-Brest-Paris, même si ce ne fut pas officiel, même si ce fut à tandem. Elle s’appelait Juliette GANIER, était née en 1893 à Paris où elle demeurait. Elle se fera connaître ensuite sous le nom de Juliette PITARD et s’inscrira au tableau d’honneur des trois premiers Paris-Brest-Paris randonneur (1931, 1948, 1951). Reprenons donc l’histoire en partant de l’atelier de Pierre DESVAGES où Juliette tenait la caisse. Au nombre des ouvriers on comptera, après la guerre, Louis PITARD, né en 1895 à Paris. Il était membre de l’ACP et dans les années 20 il roulait abondamment, par goût du sport, de la mécanique et peut-être aussi pour oublier la Grande Guerre à laquelle il avait participé avec beaucoup de courage. Blessé après la seconde bataille d’Artois en 1915, il combattit jusqu’à sa capture par les Allemands, puis son évasion en 1918. Démobilisé fin 1919, il fut décoré de la Croix de Guerre. Parmi les membres du bureau de l’ACP, dont Louis PITARD était un membre très actif, figurait celui qui allait créer en 1923, et présider, la première Fédération Française des Sociétés de Cyclotourisme, l’ancêtre de la FFCT, Gaston CLÉMENT. Sa fille unique, Yvonne CLÉMENT, elle-même cyclotouriste, fut séduite par cet homme « intelligent, calme et résolu », selon les mots qui figurent sur son livret militaire. Louis PITARD et Yvonne CLÉMENT se marièrent à Vanves en 1923. Hélas, un an plus tard un stupide accident, à leur domicile de l’avenue de Versailles, devait coûter la vie à Yvonne qui décédait à 22 ans, laissant Louis PITARD veuf et Gaston CLÉMENT anéanti pour le reste de sa vie. Les années qui suivirent furent difficiles pour Louis PITARD. Son travail de cadreur dans l’atelier de cycles de Pierre DESVAGES et les randonnées à vélo avec ses camarades de l’ACP l’aidèrent à surmonter son chagrin. Pour preuve, voici un peu plus loin, son récit d’un brevet randonneur de 200 qu’il fit le 25 septembre 1927 avec son ami Louis OLLIER (et non ALLEX comme écrit dans La Pédale), lui aussi de l’ACP. Les photos de Louis PITARD sont rares mais la BNF en possède une, prise à la Poly de Chanteloup en 1925 avec Juliette, où ils finirent premier des tandems mixtes dans la pluie et la boue avec l’obligation comme tous les concurrents de transporter cinq kilos de bagages. Le tandem est un tandem DESVAGES reconnaissable à ses innovations. On notera le lourd paquet de journaux sur le porte-bagage arrière, ainsi que le retour au parallélisme des manivelles. C’est dans ce contexte que Louis PITARD et Juliette GANIER, la caissière-randonneuse-tandémiste de Pierre DESVAGES décidèrent d’unir leurs destinées le 18 août 1928 à la mairie de Mamers. Voilà donc comment Juliette devint Madame PITARD. Ils constituèrent pendant plus de 50 ans un couple uni de sportifs, mais cette fois en chevauchant un tandem PITARD, que Louis avait construit dans la boutique qu’il avait ouverte dans le 15e arrondissement, puis ensuite rue St Martin. Toujours fidèles à l’ACP, ils furent parmi les rares cyclos à revenir en 1948, après avoir été déjà présents au Paris-Brest de 1931. Et pour faire bonne mesure, ils ajoutèrent un troisième PBP en 1951, devenant ainsi les premiers à l’homologuer trois fois. En fin d’article se trouve l’extrait d’une lettre de Louis PITARD, que possédait Robert LEPERTEL, dans laquelle il évoque leurs trois Paris-Brest. A la retraite, ils se retirèrent à Mollans-sur-Ouvèze, sur le versant nord du Ventoux. Juliette y est décédée en 1979 et Louis en 1986. L’inscription effacée sur la plaque du cimetière est : « À Louis et Juliette PITARD, Constructeurs et Pratiquants, la Fédération Française de Cyclotourisme reconnaissante ». Quant à Pierre DESVAGES, le père fondateur des Tandémistes Parisiens, qui fut à l’origine de tout cela, il est décédé à Limeil-Brévannes en 1933, à l’âge de 65 ans.

Il y a cent ans, ainsi que nous l’avons déjà évoqué, l’ACP a organisé son premier brevet randonneur à allure libre, mais cette année-là, quelques jours avant, eut lieu un autre événement, comme tous les dix ans depuis 1891 : la course cycliste Paris-Brest et retour. Celle-ci fut organisée par le journal l’Auto dont le patron tout puissant était Henri DESGRANGE, le même qui venait de retirer à l’ACP l’organisation des brevets dits Audax, c’est-à-dire à allure contrôlée avec capitaines de route. Ce Paris-Brest 1921 était un Paris-Brest de compétiteurs réservé à deux catégories : les coureurs et les touristes-routiers. Donc pas de place pour les randonneurs qui, de toutes façons, venant à peine de naître aux brevets à allure libre de 200 km, n’étaient absolument pas demandeurs. En revanche ils seront prêts pour l’édition suivante, celle de 1931, qui sera celle du premier Paris-Brest-Paris randonneur. Toutefois un homme ne l’entendait pas ainsi. Il s’appelait Pierre DESVAGES. Né dans la Manche en 1867, il avait été coureur professionnel participant à huit Tours de France consécutifs dont celui de 1903, le premier. Il avait aussi couru Bordeaux-Paris et deux fois Paris-Brest et retour en 1901 (46e en 119h40) et 1911 (42e en 115h40) dans la catégorie des touristes-routiers. Devenu constructeur et marchand de cycles, il ouvrit en 1914 une boutique rue d’Alésia à Paris et créa sa propre marque. En 1921, âgé de 54 ans, il n’était plus en mesure de rivaliser avec les touristes-routiers, mais il avait terriblement envie de faire encore une fois Paris-Brest et retour et – peut-être encore plus – de démontrer la qualité des machines de sa marque. Comment est-il arrivé à ses fins ? Il l’a raconté avec une extraordinaire richesse de détails dans un récit qui fit la joie des lecteurs du journal de Vélocio : le Cycliste. Son texte est paru dans quatre numéros, de mars-avril 1922 à septembre-octobre 1922. Je vous le livre volontiers ci-dessous avec deux photos de Pierre DESVAGES et de Juliette, provenant des collections de la BNF. Ils présentent leur merveilleux tandem dont on remarquera la fourche à suspension, la lampe à carbure et les selles articulées, dont Pierre DESVAGES parle abondamment dans son compte-rendu. Enfin les amateurs de tandem auront noté le décalage prononcé entre les manivelles du pilote et celles de la passagère. Il permet de gommer en souplesse le fameux point mort du pédalage. Pour ceux qui aimeraient connaître ce qui s’est passé après ce Paris-Brest de 1921, qui était Juliette, la caissière de Pierre DESVAGES, et ce qu’elle est devenue, je leur donne rendez-vous dans un prochain article.
